Can This Pandemic Change the Golf Cart?

A

few days ago I played a round of golf at my home course with some elderly guys from the club. These gentlemen play in a men’s group twice a week, every week and even though the monetary stakes are not high, they take it pretty damn seriously. When I play in this league I try not to muck it up or I’ll hear about it. I love playing with them because they are hilarious. On average they are 20-30 years older than me but they keep me laughing for all five hours of the round. Until a few days ago that is. I still laughed a lot but it was only for three hours and 50 minutes. It occurred to me that we shaved almost an hour off of that round and at first I couldn’t understand why. Bobby still hooked one in the woods every other hole and spent 5 minutes trying to find his Kirkland ball. Al still missed the same putts even after he studied them for many minutes. Frank still couldn’t resist hawking golf balls out of the water with his telescoping golf ball retriever. (I think he enjoys this more than playing golf.) After the round I approached the head pro and asked him if he noticed shorter rounds. He confirmed it. I asked why. He said since Covid-19 each player had their own cart and pace of play started to improve immediately. I felt foolish because it was so obvious. Golfers only went to their own balls instead of crisscrossing back and forth waiting for each other to hit. As I was driving home an image flashed in my head from the 2020 PGA Merchandise Show of a single person golf cart scooter. I couldn’t remember who made it and at the time, I wondered about its business viability. Would golf courses ever change their mode of transportation? I seriously doubted it. But that was before Covid-19. Social distancing has permeated every aspect of our life. Why wouldn’t it impact our golf? I did a little googling and discovered that I wasn’t the only one who thought these single rider golf scooters might be a hot commodity. I read a very interesting article from ESPN’s staff writer Tom VanHaaren. He looked into two manufacturers, Phat Scooters and Finn Scooters, and discovered that before the pandemic golf courses were reluctant to consider switching to single riders. Since the pandemic golf courses are coming to them and can’t sign up fast enough. So will this pandemic change the way we ride around golf courses forever? I don’t know but I do know this. I’d rather play a three hour and 50 minute round than a four hour 45 minute round. And I’d lean out on a limb here and say that golfers will go back to play courses that offer faster rounds. Pace of play is a big problem. Especially here in SW Florida where during snowbird season rounds can last as long as it would take me to paint my house.

GREAT DAY, INC. MANUFACTURER OF GOLF CAR ACCESSORIES ANNOUNCES A NEW LINE OF HUNTING ACCESSORIES

car is facilitated by a consumer who asks for a certain product that the dealer doesn’t have access to or that they need for certain hunting seasons. For an OEM golf car manufacturer looking to accessorize their fleet, Great Day, Inc. provides several trending products to help meet the demand of the OEM dealer floor plans as well. For more information about Great Day, Inc., a USbased manufacturer, please call 1-318-574-5003 or visit online at www.greatdayinc.com.

Great Day is looking to offer their customers quality hunting upgrades for their golf cars. Many golf cars do not come standard with hunting accessories on them. So, naturally, as hunting season gets closer, golf car owners start to research and add new products to their golf car for hunting. Golf car dealers have an opportunity to capitalize at their Point-of-Sale on a new or used golf car, adding profit exponentially to their dealership, which arrives over and above the normal floor plan capabilities. With this in mind, one of the main factors that makes the Great Day brand an easy choice for a dealer when it comes to choosing hunting accessories for a golf car is being able to order the hunting product in less than container-load quantities, and to assure that the R&D, fitment, and customer service will be handled by professionals. Great Day’s dealer pricing is easy to understand and can be made available to the vast network of golf car dealers. • Gunracks • Bowracks • Hitch Mounted Cargo Carriers • Front Racks • Roof Racks Regarding market coverage, golf car dealers will also find it advantageous that the hunting accessories market for golf cars is not a well-saturated market in either physical stores or online retailers. The current offerings are limited to only a small number of accessories for hunting and oftentimes may not be able to fulfill due to shortages of imported product. Great Day, Inc. allows for domestic production, so ordering smaller quantities and receiving product quickly helps you better service your customers. Typically, the need for a hunting upgrade to a golf GOLF CARTING MAGAZINE 9

EXCESSIVE CARTS We sit down with the owner of the industry's top cart builder to find out how their carts are excessive.

16 GOLFCARTING.COM

E

xcessive Carts is a Dallas/Fort Worth-based custom golf cart dealer that specializes in… EXCESS. These custom carts are not your run-of-the-mill rebuilds. Excessive Carts are something different altogether. Think Kevlar, brush guards, top-end stereo systems, beefy suspensions, custom-molded dashes. These carts are over-the-top bad ass and are becoming something of a legend. We were very excited to have a friend of Golf Carting Magazine, Jennifer Alexander, a long-time golf cart industry expert, spend some time with Rob Wallach, the founder of Excessive Carts and a retired 20-year Air Force Veteran. We wanted to find out how this iconic golf cart dealer started and where they are headed.

PHOTOGAPHY BY EXCESSIVE CARTS

GCMAG: Okay. Rob, it is so good to be able to spend some time with you again. I have seen you grow almost from day one back when I was your sales person at Double Take. You have built quite a business here, let’s get right into it… How did you start in the industry or rather, how did you get into the industry? Rob: Jennifer, thanks to Golf Carting Magazine for even considering myself and the Excessive Carts team for this great opportunity. Back in 2014, I was looking for a golf cart. I had two jet skis and wanted to get rid of those to buy a golf cart. I like to support the little guy so I opened Facebook and searched for custom golf carts, I found Epic Carts in Frisco TX, a local corporate guy looking for some new innovated fun way to earn a little extra income. I called him up to check out his carts. I went over, checked out the cart, and drove it around and I was really checking out the stereo set up. The owner, Blair, asked me what I did and I told him I install stereos. We made an arrangement where I put stereos in his golf carts. He would just order the carts and I'd put stereos in them because he had no one doing any warranty for him. At that point, he was working out of his garage. Whenever he ordered a cart, he'd call me up and I would put in the audio and LED Lighting in my garage. Outside 20 years in the Air Force, car audio has been my passion and installing stereo system in golf carts was my introduction in this fast growing amazing industry. As customers asked for more customizations, I started molding dashes fiberglassing TV’s in the dash, get it all painted or wrap it with vinyl. This was real exciting to Epic and we formed a great relationship. Long story short, I said to Blair, "Whoever is building your carts, the quality and craftsmanship could be a lot better." So sarcastically he said, "You want to start building my carts?" I said, "Yeah, sure." We then changed our arrangement where I would build the carts and he would sell them. At this time, he was building on Club Car chassis and I knew nothing about golf carts. I didn't know the difference in quality and craftsmanship between the various brands and models. With my background in car audio and customizing vehicles for so many years, I just started winging it, taking the carts apart, putting Kevlar on them, covering seats, putting stereo systems and LED lighting in them and it evolved more and more. This went on for a while and I actually hired my first employee, Ryan within 6 months in July of 2015. I taught him how to take your time and do it right the first time, like how to assemble and wire, how to solder, and the importance of paying attention to detail. I passed along to him as much knowledge as I had. If you deliver a premium product, you will attract premium clientele. During this same time, late summer to early winter of 2015 I would travel up to Alaska and install Remote Starts on 500-700 local vehicles. I have been doing this for several years and being away from my family 5 months out of the year was getting old. I decided to sell the business in Alaska so I I could focus on producing golf carts full time and be with my family. Just as I made my decision to sell my car audio business in Alaska, I received a phone call from Epic Carts and they told me GOLF CARTING MAGAZINE 17

they are moving on with a different plan. I was torn and had no direction so out of the blue I decided to start something on my own. Excessive Carts was born, I created the name, a logo and a Facebook page. It was eye-candy on Facebook, people could not resist seeing these different colored carts scrolling through their time lines. I put out a post saying, "Excessive Carts is giving away a free golf cart and I received 3,000 likes on the page within two weeks. All of a sudden, people started showing up at the door and it was starting to evolve. The quality and unique designs of our carts really spoke for themselves. We developed a strong following by throwing eye-candy on there and showing our carts on Facebook. We would show our carts at local flea markets, neighborhood functions, and supported various local fund-raisers. Excessive Carts was getting a name in the small town of Prosper TX. Ryan and myself were so busy I then I hired my second employee the summer of 2016 for Excessive Carts. GCMAG: Who was that? Rob: That was Mike. He's a Louisiana rough-neck that don’t take no chit from anybody. He was rough around the edges, however Ryan molded him and turned him into a valuable 18 GOLFCARTING.COM

asset to the team. Within 6 months, we hired our third (Austin), fourth (Ron), and fifth employees (Cory). I used to pretty much do every drop-off, pick-up, powder coat runs, Kevlar runs, service calls. I handled the marketing, sales, and every other aspects of the business while Ryan, Mike, Ron, and Cory focused on building the carts. Clientele grew up into mid 2017 and word got around,

we were having the time of our lives and all of a sudden we were just getting overwhelmed. I brought my cousin Derek onboard, with his knowledge and expertise in finance and analytics, we grew the business together as a team and now had 20+ employees. We were having tremendous growth with this great team over the next 2 years and it was being noticed in the golf cart industry. GCMAG: What are your future plans for growth and expansion? Rob: We recently merged with 3 other dealerships, these are owned by a long time friend and business associate Terry Hundley. He helped guide and support Excessive Carts almost since our first custom build. He took over and introduced an opportunity to continue growing Excessive Carts alongside

of his other locations in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. He brought Club Car as a dealer to Excessive Carts. We now offer brand new carts as well as our custom builds. As the golf cart industry grows, we want to continue offering our customers unique products they can’t get anywhere else. We would like to see growth and eventually become a one-stop-shop for brand new, custom remanufactured Excessive Carts, and service in North Dallas. We are striving to be a brand here locally and nationally. GCMAG: You are nationally known. You're doing it. Rob: Yes, we probably ship 40% of our custom carts out of state and even international. We shipped a cart to Qatar. When starting this I had a vision to be the West Coast Customs of golf carts, and we think we're on our way to that. We think GOLF CARTING MAGAZINE 19

a lot of people know who we are, we just want to continue to do that and keep evolving. As the industry matures, the market will see similar carts to what we have been building. Our goal is to continue evolving and always be on the cutting edge of innovation and design. We’ve been able to do that through strong partnerships with local vendors and a great production team. GCMAG: Where do you see the future of the industry as a whole? Rob: I see it continuing to grow. We see the master-planned communities out here and it's almost like people are forced into keeping up with the Joneses. People get carts because of the convenience of taking the kids to school, whipping over to the neighbors, or just a late night ride under the stars with The Eagles playing on the stereo. It’s growing year by year We live right across the street from one of the nicest and largest master-planned communities in the nation, Light Farms, they've received all kinds of awards. There's going to be thirty-five-hundred homes in there, and I guarantee 60% of the people have or will have carts. There's another master plan community at the same size down the road and another one down the other road. We are at the right place at the right time. GCMAG: That’s great. 20 GOLFCARTING.COM

Rob: We see it being huge. As long as the laws stay in place and people abide by the laws.. We are hoping there's more towns like The Villages in Florida and Peachtree City in Georgia, these communities rely on golf carts as their primary transportation to and from everday activities. GCMAG: True. I know a little about your team. You’ve got 20 people there. That's a lot. Rob: Yes, we have been growing steadily, but even more so in recent months. We have a really strong team of dedicated professionals who work hard to deliver a quality experience and product from our initial design session to final cart delivery. As hard as we work, we have to remember that this is a really fun business. Rob: We love the customers that come in and we get to design a unique cart together. We feel honored that customers are willing to invest in a product and have absolutely no idea what the finished product will look like. We have never had a dissatisfied customer with a design. GCMAG: Yes. That sounds great. Rob: Also, something to add, a lot of people ask us how we get the inspiration of the color combinations, we have absolutely no idea. We are having fun just like an artist is on slapping paint on a canvas. It all comes together in the end.

I just think of things and sometimes, I question myself, "Oh, my God, was that a good decision?" The cart, when it's being built, it's pretty much not what we really wanted. Then when the seats come in, you’re still not sure, but then when you put them together, they match up and a masterpiece appears. It’s always good when a plan comes together and since we opened in March 2016, its has come together and I could have not done it without my team, Team Excessive!!! MATT'S CUSTOM GOLF CARTS M

att’s Custom Golf Carts located in Fort Myers, FL opened its doors in 2018 and since the very first day things took off. Specializing in custom builds, Matts Carts has been thriving in this golf-cart-centric SW Florida market. Matts Golf Carts is also a complete golf cart service center. I had the opportunity to visit Matts a few months ago and immediately upon entering the store I was struck at how busy everyone was. The showroom was packed with new and used carts and striking custom rebuilds. There was an energy about the place that made me want to buy something right then and there. The service department was thriving with an almost frenetic pace of activity. The overall sense I got was a golf cart shop oozing success. I caught up with a very busy Matt Bucci, owner of Matts Custom Golf Carts to learn a little more his business.

DEALER PROFILE: Dealer Name: Matts Custom Golf Carts Dealer Location: 12894 Metro Pkwy, Fort Myers, FL 33966 Phone Number: (239) 333-8895 Owners: Matt and Miki Bucci Brands: Club Car, Evolution Specialty: Custom Cart Builds

GCMAG: How did you get I to the industry?

Matt: I always had a passion for customizing things throughout my life.

GCMAG: When did your business really take off and why? Matt: I've always wanted to custom-build golf carts and in

2018, one day I woke up and said I'm going to start my dream and that's how I started my business with my wife. I did all the custom builds and she did the deliveries. From there we just grew and grew.

GCMAG: What are your future plans for growth and expansion? Matt: Our future goal is to expand. We want to have several stores and continue to grow our already growing business.

GCMAG: Where do you see the future of the industry? Matt: Having several locations and continuing to provide excellent customer service.

GCMAG: Can you tell us about your team?

Matt: We have an amazing team. We have several Certified EZ-

GO Techs and we have a female mechanic. We have our own welders. We have our own break-down-carts crew. We have a terrific office staff that can multitask like no other. We also have a designated delivery person and of course a salesman. We are one big happy family. We are family-owned and operated.

GCMAG: What was your favorite custom build and why?

Matt: Our all-time favorite build was for a F1 Formula #44 Petronas Race Car. We had over 40-hours of a custom paint job in it. We stretched a two-passenger RXV into a six-passenger. The reason why I would say this was our favorite build is because it was an honor to build this for one of our high-end clients. We love a challenge! We were able to replicate a golf cart to their Race Car.

In it, Ryan shows us step by-step how to upgrade the motor to double the speed using a Plum Quick Bandit motor. Ryan Fenters: What's going on guys? I just picked up this 2014 Club Car Precedent and the first upgrade we're going to do is make this thing faster. Right now it is doing about twelvemiles per hour but with the help of a Plum Quick motor, it's going to go a lot faster. All right, so getting started we want to place the cart in the off position. Underneath the seat is going to be a tow/run switch. We want to put this switch into tow mode and I like to remove the positive battery cable to the pack just in case any of the wires decide to touch each other. In order to access the motor, there's going to be a motor cover and once you have the two clips removed, go ahead and take the cover itself and slide up with it. The motor has four wires on it and there's a speed sensor plug on the right-hand

side of the motor, the passenger's side of the golf cart. The first thing I like to do is get my cellphone out and take a picture of where the wires go. That way when we get the new Plum Quick motor in, we'll know which wires go where. Now, once you have the access cover off, you can wipe off the motor to get the numbers so you can send in the Plum Quick.

Now we have all four wires removed from the motor. The next step, we need to release this connector going to the speed sensor. We just need to push it down and pull it away and the motor is fully disconnected from the golf cart electrically. Take the wires and move them out the way. What’s holding the motor onto the axle is three bolts. I'm just going to take a 7/16-inch wrench to remove those bolts. Now go ahead and just note this motor's very heavy, so it's not just going to unbolt and pop right off. There's a shaft and we're going to have to slide it off the shaft. Once you have all the bolts loose, go ahead and remove them by hand. All three bolts are out, now the motor is just going to spin by itself. We need to remove the motor away from the axle and now we have the motor out. Before you package your motor up and send it to Plum Quick, be sure to remove the speed sensor so it doesn't get

damaged in shipping. Retain this as you're going to need this for the new motor. To remove this, you can use a flathead or a 5/16 socket wrench. The motor I opted for is the Plum Quick Bandit. This is the entry-level motor, it runs about $275. The motor comes painted, it comes with a handle on it, it's got new studs with nuts on it. Very clean motor and you're just going to have to add your speed sensor to it, bolt it on to the cart and go. They make tons of other motors that does various things from just speed or just torque. These guys have been in business since the early eighties and its a family business that started with their father, Carson and two brothers Ricky and Robby Steen. Plum Quick also holds the World Records and the Guinness Book World Record for the fastest golf cart. All right guys, here is the motor it showed up today. Let's get started.

This is the PH Bandit and my cart is a PH cart. There's the Excel controller and everything on this golf cart. This is the Bandit and it's got the handle here, they've given us some new studs. The speed sensor and everything is back on. Next we need GOLF CARTING MAGAZINE 29

doityourself to get our wrenches ready and place it back on the cart. We’re going to slide the motor through the opening and we're going to place the female shaft onto the male shaft at the rear end. Once we have the motor sitting on the rear end shaft, we're going to take our mounting hardware and going to rotate the housing of the motor until the male threads drop into the female threads and we're going to tighten them down.

We can go ahead and put the cover back on it and install the clips and take it for a ride.

All right guys, once you have the motor and everything in place, we need to change it from the tow to the run position.

There is a slight gap and we're not going to make the mounting bolts compress the motor but going to continually rotate the motor, rock it back and forth so that we can eliminate this gap before we tighten the bolts. We need to connect the wires back to the motor. Remember we took a picture of how the wires went. The golf

cart is off, and it is in tow mode. I think we had green at the large connector and we had orange here and that's what we're going to do to put those back together. The back wires are the ones that you cannot see, the 7/16 are going to be blue, the half-inch is going to be white. I'm just starting with my hand and we'll tighten them up. Now as we have all the wires done, we'll go ahead and snap together this triangle connector on the end of the motor until it locks into place. Everything is now back together and everything is tight. 30 GOLFCARTING.COM

We also need to re-hook up the power wire to the battery. All right, there you go guys. This Plum Quick Bandit motor upgrade took this stock golf cart from 12 miles per hour max up to 23 miles per hour max. Not bad when you consider the batteries are roughly two years old in this golf cart. Visit: https://www.youtube.com/channel/ UCjEZ2_9ho0_8vyoVjfVHAEg

THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO GOLF CART LIFT KITS

L

et’s face it. Lifted carts are cool carts. They are here to stay. The custom golf cart market is demanding bigger, beefier carts and the lift-kit market is burgeoning. In this ultimate guide to lift kits, we’ll break down the different types of lift kits, their capabilities and discuss a few of the most popular brands. Lift Kit Basics Lift kits are simply engineered parts that are installed on a golf cart to raise or “lift” the height anywhere from three-to-ten inches. What’s the purpose? Cart owners want more ground clearance. They want more stability. But mostly they want bigger tires and rims.

40 GOLFCARTING.COM

Let’s go over the various options… GOLF CART LIFT KIT OPTIONS All lift kits are not created equal. There are a variety of different types for different needs. A-ARM LIFT KIT A-Arm lift kits tend to be a more robust version of the drop spindle kits (we’ll get to these in a minute). These kits basically replace the front suspension of the golf cart and provides for a smoother more comfortable ride. A-Arm kits are designed to equip carts with larger wheels and tires. They’re likely the most popular lift kits for golf carts

and considered very durable. They are also affordable. DROP SPINDLE LIFT KIT Drop spindle lift kits are widely used to gain ground clearance. These kits are a cinch to install since they utilize the existing suspension, and they are not expensive. By increasing cart spindle size, they give the cart a wider stance and increased stability. The wider stance accommodates bigger, off-set wheels allowing for wider and taller tires. Drop spindle kits are normally available in two styles -heavy duty and economy depending on how the cart will be used.

BLOCK LIFT KIT Block lift kits are perfect for the instant gratification people. If you want to instantly lift your cart with minimal amount of work block lifts can be the answer. They are four-inch steel blocks that are installed under the existing suspension. That said, they are

limited to just four-inches and have been known to make the ride a little more bumpy. DROP AXLE LIFT KIT Drop axle lifts will increase ground clearance by replacing the front axle with the “drop axle. They add a longer stock radius that tapers down to the spindles already attached to the golf cart.

This increases the axle height and allows the replacement of the whole front axle without having to engage your spindles. These kits are typically less expensive than spindle kits but may not ride as smoothly as carts that have an A-Arm or spindle lift kit. GOLF CARTING MAGAZINE 41

accessoriesguide And they can be a little more complicated to install.

LONG TRAVEL LIFT KITS Long travel lift kits are the most durable, capable and expensive kits you can install on a golf cart. They provide independent front suspension and have long bouncy springs that are shock absorbers. Long travel lifts are available in six-to-eight inches. These extreme duty lifts are similar to coil over lift kits. GOLF CART LIFT KIT SIZES – SIZE DOES MATTER The lift height of a golf cart is going to determine a lot of things, like appropriate terrain, wheel and tire accommodation and of course aesthetics. COMMON LIFT KIT SIZES 3" & 4” Lifts • Great for 20” tires • Available in all the above-mentioned options • Perfect for the “slight lift” for stability and look • Inexpensive and easy to install • 4” block lifts are simple to install and inexpensive 6" Lifts • Most popular lift height • Easy to find for all the big brands (Yamaha, Club Car, EZ-GO) • Accommodates wheels up to 23 inches 7" – 12" Lifts • Lift kits for heavy duty suspension and monster tires • Built for rigorous off-road conditions • Long travel lifts are a good idea when going higher than 6” CHOOSING THE RIGHT LIFT KIT FOR YOUR GOLF CART TIRE SIZE The following are tables to aid in choosing the right size lift kit for both tires and cart manufacturers. CLUB CAR Club Car tends to have very little space on their stock setup for 42 GOLFCARTING.COM

F

rom time to time we get golf-cart-related questions from our readers either on our website (GolfCarting.com) or from our social media pages. When we get these questions we reach out to our sponsors and advertisers who are leaders in the golf cart industry and get educated answers to better help our readers.

Q: My battery cable ends seems to be melting or get extremely hot. What’s going on?

A: This could be caused by the cables not being tightened properly and causing an arch and extreme heat. Make sure the connections are cleaned and your cables are tightened down making a solid connection with the battery posts. This could also be caused by faulty or improper gauge cables. You want to make sure these cables are a minimum of 6 gauge (which most stock carts come with), but we recommend 4 gauge or even 2 gauge, especially if you are going to modify anything with the electrical system in the cart.

Q: What is the difference between a golf cart and a LSV (low speed vehicle)? 46 GOLFCARTING.COM

A: The simple answer is LSVs are registered vehicles with the DMV. In some states an LSV is considered an automobile and must follow most the same rules and regulation as a typical car. LSVs must have the proper safety accessories such as headlights, turn signals, break lights, a horn, DOT approved windshields, seat belts and they must be able to reach a speed of 25mph. LSVs in some states can be driven on the roads with posted speed limits of 35 mph or less. Please check the laws with your state’s DMV for exact information on rules and regulations.

Q: My cart will only move a few feet and then stop. What should I check first?

A: We get this question a lot and the answer could be many different things but the most common cause is a bad or improperly connected forward / reverse switch. This problem happens very often and the forward reverse switch is probably the most replaced part on a golf cart. They get used a lot and often times go bad or the connecter on back comes loose. It’s a simple fix and a very inexpensive part for most golf carts, so we recommend checking this first, making sure the connections are solid or replacing it all together.
