The Electric Cart as a Social Connector

Life In the grand tapestry of modern suburban life, where the roar of SUVs and the hustle of daily commutes paint a somewhat frenetic picture, a quiet revolution is underway. It's not the kind heralded by blaring headlines or viral tweets, but rather the gentle hum of electric carts, quietly zipping along neighborhood streets, ferrying their occupants not just from Point A to Point B, but into the very heart of community life.

Gone are the days when electric carts were mere novelties, relegated to the lush greens of golf courses or the dusty shelves of retirement dreams. Today, they've emerged as the unsung heroes of neighborhood connectivity, transforming into social vessels that navigate the complex waters of community interaction with the grace of a diplomat and the speed of a pizza delivery scooter. Imagine the scene: a sunny afternoon, the gentle buzz of electric motors in the air, and the streets alive with the vibrant parade of carts. Each one is a pocketsized party on wheels, a mobile lounge that invites spontaneous conversations, shared laughs, and the

occasional friendly race with the neighborhood squirrels. It's a world where the question "Can I get a ride?" has replaced "How's the weather?" as the ultimate icebreaker.

But let's not sugarcoat it – driving an electric cart doesn't suddenly grant you a PhD in social dynamics. What it does offer, however, is a unique blend of accessibility and informality that breaks down barriers faster than you can say "zero emissions." It's hard to maintain an air of solemnity when you're cruising at a breezy 15 miles per hour, wind in your hair, and a basket of freshly picked lemons from your neighbor's tree in the backseat. Electric carts have turned driveways into docks, where neighbors embark on voyages of discovery, exploring the uncharted territories of their own subdivisions. They're the modern-day chariots of choice for those daring souls who venture forth to borrow a cup of sugar, return a wayward pet, or simply catch up on the latest gossip under the guise of a leisurely ride.

And let's not overlook the environmental angle –these electric chariots are as green as the envy of every gas-guzzling SUV owner watching a parade of carts glide by, occupants chatting merrily, unencumbered by the need for parking spaces the size of a small country. In the end, electric carts are more than just vehicles; they're catalysts for community cohesion, rolling reminders that sometimes, the journey is indeed more important than the destination. So, the next time you can’t find a parking spot at the community pool for all the LSVs, tip your hat to these social connectors on wheels. They're not just transporting neighbors; they're driving community spirit, one quiet, electric mile at a time.

Building one of America’s Best Carts

With an unwavering dedication to their mission of “Principles over Profit,” HONOR, located in Summerville, South Carolina, makes the only all aluminum golf and luxury low speed vehicles designed, manufactured, and built in the U.S.

Founder and CEO, Brian Plaisance, launched the company with key principles in full focus; Re-shoring jobs to our country in an industry that is dominated by foreign manufacturers. HONOR is committed to giving jobs back to America and their local community. HONOR can build carts at scale with a price point that resets the bar for a premium product for everyone. Having built 2 previous USA based successful industrial manufacturing companies, Plaisance knows both the company and dealers can be profitable in this mission.

One look at HONOR’s impressive high-tech manufacturing facility will show you that this innovative company is poised for future growth. From the beginning, Plaisance and the entire team have been focused on enlisting top-of-the line tools and advanced manufacturing technology in building their vehicles. The engineers and well trained staff manufactures their carts with state-of-the-art lasers and robotic welding processes that rival any in the automotive and aerospace industries. As an example, the HONOR facility boasts the largest automated powder coating line in all of South Carolina.

GOLF CARTING MAGAZINE 17

“We’re the only golf cart and low speed vehicle company that makes our own frame and subframe in house and assembles from the ground up, down to every nut and bolt, in our own American plant,” Plaisance said. “We’re extremely proud of that, and our significant investment in tomorrow’s technology continues to set us apart.”

PREMIUM CARTS, REASONABLE PRICING

HONOR currently offers 2 different models, the 2+2 G1 and the 4+2 G1. The G1 Country Club was launched at the PGA SHOW In Orlando and will begin spring deliveries. This is our version of the classic, luxury country club community cart. In late 2024, they will launch a stunning 4 seat forward facing BOULEVARD model for the neighborhood electric vehicle community.

The 2+2 model offers our proprietary cushioning and seating for 4 people. The 2+2 is the ultimate in flexibility to cruise your golf course community, head to the beach, or daily neighborhood cruise. Standard features include the 105Ah Eco Battery® Lithium battery with an 8 Year Warranty, 4kW motor and 450A controller and a 30A inverter. You can select a 3” or 6” lift. Other 2+2 standard features are the 4-wheel disc brakes, independent and adjustable front suspension, 10-inch

touchscreen display with Bluetooth®, premium seats with storage, seatbelts, self-canceling LED turn signals in the side mirrors, adjustable height roof, rear flip seat with a cooler and a foldable windshield.

The 2+2 begins at around $14,000.

HONOR’s 4+2 vehicle carries 6 passengers and is the perfect way to take the family around your vacation property, cruise up to the country club for dinner or transport passengers around a large real estate property, school campus, medical or hotel facility and much more.

The standard features on this beautiful cart include all those found on the 2+2 model.

For those who want to upgrade their HONOR LSV with more bells and whistles, the company offers premium features like a 33-inch ECOXGEAR soundbar, an 8-inch ECOXGEAR subwoofer, brush guard, clays basket, a 160Ah or 210Ah Eco Battery® Lithium battery, 20-inch safety rear light bar, 32-inch safety front light bar, backup camera, radial tire upgrade, aluminium side steps and a trailer hitch with custom hitch accessories.

The 4+2 model retails for approximately $16,000.

The company showcased their vehicles at the PGA Show held in Orlando in late January, and Plaisance said the turnout

www.GolfCarting.com 18

was impressive. “We ended up having to host potential dealers in groups because the demand to learn more about our products was so great,” he said. “We were invigorated by the interest in our company and vehicles and look forward to continuing our mission with new products and unmatched American quality.”

Plaisance is laser-focused on serving the needs of HONOR’s 85-plus dealer network and will never compete with

them for sales. “We don’t do retail sales so as not to compete with our dealers,” he said. “I answer every call from our dealers on my personal cell phone and will always do everything I can to ensure the HONOR brand continues to grow and remain successful.”

HOW TO BUY

CLITHIUM BATTERIES FOR YOUR ELECTRIC VEHICLE

Choosing where to buy your lithium golf cart battery is a crucial decision that impacts not just the quality of the product you get but also the support and service you can expect post-purchase. The market for these batteries is evolving, with a shift from traditional lead-acid to lithium, and new brands and supply chains are emerging. Here’s a summary of the three major retail outlets for these batteries, including their pros and cons:

1. Amazon/Factory Direct Products: This is often the least expensive option, offering products from brands that might be unfamiliar because they’re typically new to the market, often originating from Chinese manufacturers. These brands may use aggressive online marketing strategies, including social media ads and sponsored content from YouTube influencers. However, the risk with these products lies in their after-sales service and warranty support, which can be unreliable. The lack of company insurances and accountabilities for loss is a huge factor. The transient nature of these brands—where they can easily rebrand or change names—complicates accountability. While not all such companies are problematic, caution is advised due to potential service and warranty issues.

2. Online Golf Car or Battery Retailers: These platforms usually sell well-known U.S. brands, offering domestic warranties.

Although their prices can be competitive due to lower overhead costs and national reach, their ability to provide direct warranty support is limited. The level of after-sale service varies; some may assist with warranty claims or direct you to the manufacturer. It’s recommended to contact these retailers directly to gauge the level of support they offer, as it’s an important consideration for your purchase decision.

3. Local Golf Car or Battery Retailers: Local dealers and battery sales & service providers offer significant value through immediate product availability, in-person customer service, and potential installation services. They are invested in their reputation, both locally and online, and have a strong incentive to ensure customer satisfaction. This option is ideal for those who prioritize reliable after-sales support and are willing to pay a premium for it.

In conclusion, the adage “you get what you pay for” is particularly relevant here. Considering the small but significant risk of manufacturer defects and the potential for user errors that could necessitate support, investing in a product with reliable after-sale service and warranty support is crucial. It’s advisable to research and communicate with potential sellers to find one that is committed to quality and customer satisfaction.

INSPIRATION KART KING BUILDS RADICAL CUSTOMS BASED ON FAVORITE MOVIE

If you grew up as a car guy in the south, there’s no question you would be a fan of racing movies. That’s where the inspiration for 4 amazing custom carts started for Kart King, based in Georgia.

Kart King has become a recognized leader in the custom cart business since their founding in 2019, building their business on not only out-of-the-box concepts for custom builds, but for their steadfast dedication to the ultimate in personalized customer service. Kart King has a staff of 5 fabricator/builders, 2 in the sales department, plus support staff.

Company Founder, Barry Hall, explains how these customs came to be. “One of our team’s top favorite movies ever is Days of Thunder,” Hall says. “We started thinking of how to pay tribute to those race cars as custom carts, and we loved every step of the process.”

Days of Thunder starred Tom Cruise and was released in 1990, portraying a young stock car driver working his way up. Cruise played fictional driver Cole Trickle, with Cary Elwes playing Russ Wheeler, along with prominent co-stars like Nicole Kidman and John C. Reilly. Hall and his expert design and fabrication team, including their FSK Division, (Full Skale

Kustoms), who performed the painstaking build on all 4 carts, made sure to replicate these oval track cars down to the last detail.

TRUE TO THE ORIGINALS

These 4 carts are built on chassis’ from NAVITAS, and the team at Kart Kings also used NAVITAS controllers. Batteries are 70V Eco Battery, and the entire power system provides enough torque for these carts to do wheelies. The bodies are the MadJax® STORM model.

The carts were lowered 2.5-inches for that authentic stock car profile, and the sticky Hoosier® tires provide incredible grip. MODZ® created the amazing custom seating, right down to the drivers’ names embroidered on them. Supporting the aggressive tires are either black steel D Wheels or Douglas aluminum wheels.

“We’ve done a lot of really awesome custom cart designand-build projects here, but I gotta say, these 4 carts are some of the funnest we’ve ever driven,” Hall said.

ABOUT KART KING

Based in Evans, Georgia, this fast-growing cart business was established in 2019. They offer new carts from Atlas and Navitas, plus equips their custom carts with premium products from Ecoxgear®, Wet Sounds®, MODZ® and Empire®.

Golf Carting Magazine has covered some of the company’s most dynamic custom builds like the cart called Deadline, which you can read about here. https://www.thekartking.com/ press

Hall adds that the Kart King must have been on the right track with these stock car-inspired builds, because all 4 of them sold at the PGA Show in Orlando in January. -GCMAG

ELECTRIC CARTS THE UNSUNG WORKHORSES OF RURAL WONDERLAND

In the sprawling expanse of the countryside, where the air is as fresh as the morning dew and the landscapes stretch further than your latest binge-watch series, a quiet transformation is brewing. It’s not the kind that involves pitchforks or torches— unless you count the LED kind. No, this is about the ascent of electric carts, the silent, eco-friendly chariots that are changing the face of rural, agricultural, and outdoor pursuits one acre at a time.

THE EVOLUTION OF THE ELECTRIC STEED

Gone are the days when electric carts were mere golf course dalliances, confined to ferrying players from tee to tee. Today, these vehicles are taking on roles that their gasguzzling ancestors could only dream of, from herding cattle on sprawling ranches to navigating the rugged terrains of hunting camps with the stealth of a cat on the prowl. In the early days, electric carts were like the polite guests at a barn dance—nice to have around but not quite adept at getting down to the nitty-gritty. Their batteries whimpered at the sight of a steep hill, and their motors groaned under the weight of anything more than a couple of golf clubs or a well-stocked cooler. But oh, how the tables have turned.

MODERN MARVELS ON FOUR WHEELS

Fast forward to today, and electric carts are the Clint

Eastwoods of the rural vehicle world—tough, reliable, and surprisingly versatile. Brands like John Deere, Club Car, and Polaris are at the forefront, offering models that come equipped with rugged tires, heavy-duty suspension systems, and batteries that scoff at the idea of a day's hard work. Take, for example, the latest models equipped with lithiumion batteries. These aren't your average AA cells; they're the powerhouses behind carts that can trek across acres of farmland, haul feed and tools, and still have juice left for a sunset escapade down to the fishing pond. They charge faster than a coyote on a rabbit chase and last longer than the winter nights. And let's talk about the torque. These modern electric carts come with enough grunt to make a tractor blush, pulling trailers loaded with hay, navigating muddy fields with the grace of a gazelle, and scaling inclines that would have their predecessors waving white flags.

THE GREEN MACHINES OF THE GREAT OUTDOORS

But it’s not all about brawn. The electric cart's ascent to rural fame is also a tale of environmental stewardship. In an age where every puff of exhaust smoke is scrutinized, these silent workhorses tread lightly on the earth. They emit no pollutants, whisper through the woods without startling wildlife, and sip electricity with the modesty of a monk. This eco-friendly aspect makes electric carts particularly appealing

golfcartmanufacturer
golfcartsecurity
www.GolfCarting.com 44

to those who live off the land. Farmers and ranchers appreciate the reduction in fuel costs and the minimal maintenance needs—no oil changes, no fuel filters, just the occasional tire check and battery top-up.

A VARIETY FOR EVERY VENTURE

The versatility of electric carts is nothing short of a Swiss Army knife on wheels. Need to patrol the perimeters of your property? There's a cart for that. Looking to offer tours of your vineyard or orchard without contributing to your carbon footprint? Electric carts have you covered, complete with custom seating arrangements and canopy tops to shield your guests from the midday sun. Hunters have found favor with these vehicles, utilizing models outfitted with camouflage wraps, gun racks, and off-road capabilities that allow for stealthy approaches to blinds or stands. The silent operation means you can sneak up on your quarry without sounding like a brass band crashing through the underbrush.

THE COMMUNITY CONNECTION

Beyond the utility and environmental benefits, electric carts foster a sense of community in rural areas. They're a common sight at local fairs, parades, and community events, serving as mobile meeting spots where neighbors can catch

up on the latest news or share a laugh over the quirks of country living.

THE ROAD AHEAD

As technology advances, so too do the prospects for electric carts in rural environments. Innovations in solar charging, energy storage, and even autonomous driving technologies promise to enhance their utility, efficiency, and appeal. Imagine a future where your electric cart autonomously follows you as you work, ready to carry your tools or harvest without so much as a button press.

In closing, the humble electric cart has emerged as a symbol of rural innovation, embodying the spirit of progress while respecting the traditions and values of the countryside. From the farm to the hunting camp, these vehicles prove that sometimes, the quietest transformations are the most impactful. So, the next time you see an electric cart gliding through a field or down a country lane, tip your hat to these modern marvels. They're not just changing the way we work and play in rural environments; they're redefining what it means to be part of the great outdoors, one silent, eco-friendly mile at a time.

ASK THE MECHANIC

Q: How do I test my golf cart’s solenoid?

A: Before you begin, ensure the golf cart is turned off, and the key is removed from the ignition. Visually inspect the solenoid and its wiring for any signs of damage, loose connections, or corrosion. If you see any issues, address them before proceeding.

TESTING FOR VOLTAGE:

• Set your digital multimeter to the voltage (V) setting.

• With the key in the off position and the cart's pedal not pressed, check the voltage across the two large terminals of the solenoid.

• You should read the full battery pack voltage (e.g., 36 volts, 48 volts) across these terminals. If there is no voltage or significantly lower voltage, it could indicate a problem with the solenoid or its connections.

TESTING THE ACTIVATION CIRCUIT:

• Have a friend assist you for this step or use a jumper wire.

• Turn the key to the "on" position, and press the accelerator pedal to activate the solenoid.

• While the solenoid is activated, use the multimeter to check the voltage across the two small terminals on the solenoid.

• You should read the full battery pack voltage again (e.g., 36 volts, 48 volts). If there is no voltage or significantly lower voltage, it may indicate a problem with the solenoid coil or the activation circuit.

TESTING FOR CONTINUITY (OPTIONAL):

• If you suspect the solenoid is faulty, you can test its continuity.

• Turn off the key and disconnect the wires from the small terminals of the solenoid.

• Set the multimeter to the continuity or resistance (ohms setting.

Place one multimeter probe on each small terminal. You should hear a beep or see a low resistance reading on the multimeter, indicating continuity. If there's no continuity, the solenoid may be faulty.

REPLACING THE SOLENOID: If you've determined that the solenoid is faulty or not functioning correctly based on the above tests, it's advisable to replace it with a new one. Ensure you use a compatible replacement solenoid for your golf cart model.

RECONNECT WIRES: After replacing the solenoid, reconnect the wires to their respective terminals securely.

Test the Cart: Turn on the key and test the cart to ensure that it operates as expected. Make sure the solenoid clicks and the cart moves when you press the accelerator pedal.

Q: How can I test my golf cart’s motor?

A: To test run a series motor, remove all the cables from the motor and connect a jumper from A1 to S1. Connect 12 to 24 volts; positive to the A2 stud on the motor and negative at S2. Swap the S1 and S2 to change rotation direction.

To test a SepEx (shunt wound regen motor), you would jump the S1 to A1 and the S2 to A2 terminals. This is two separate connections. Take 12V positive and hook to the S1/A1 combination and 12V negative goes to the S2/A2 combination. The motor should spin.

NOTE: ONLY do this with the motor attached to the transaxle! Doing this with the motor out of the cart will allow the armature to bang around since it relies on the input shaft on the rear end to center it.
