Feel the Need for Speed

Get ready to buckle up your seatbelt, because we're about to embark on a hilarious ride through the world of electric golf cart racing! Yes, you heard that right—golf carts aren't just for cruising around the fairways or neighborhood streets anymore. They've found their way onto racetracks, and its pure, electrifying entertainment!

You might be wondering; how fast can these golf carts really go? Well, hold onto your visors because these little speed demons can reach top speeds that will leave you questioning the laws of physics. Some of the souped-up carts can zoom past 40 miles per hour, which might not sound like much compared to race cars, but remember, we're talking about golf carts here!

The sheer absurdity of it all makes it impossible to watch without a smile plastered across your face. What's even more surprising is the growing trend of electric golf cart racing. Who

would have thought that this seemingly mundane vehicle could turn into a thrilling motorsport? But hey, in a world where people are racing lawnmowers, why not golf carts?

It's like the motorsport equivalent of a quirky side dish that unexpectedly steals the show. As the popularity of electric golf cart racing continues to rise, enthusiasts are getting more creative with their carts. Custom paint jobs, neon lights, and even booming sound systems can be seen adorning these racing machines.

It's like a colorful carnival on wheels, except instead of cotton candy, you get a high-speed adrenaline rush. So, if you ever find yourself in need of a good laugh and a dose of excitement, look no further than electric golf cart racing. It's a sport that defies expectations, breaks all the rules, and leaves you wondering why you've never thought of racing golf carts before.

Trust me, once you witness the spectacle firsthand, you'll never look at golf carts the same way again. And who knows, maybe you'll be inspired to strap on a helmet and take on the challenge yourself. Just remember to bring your sense of humor and leave your inhibitions at home!

Nivel provided the Storm Body for Capone, while VHCL Mats contributed a durable and visually appealing custom mat for the floorboard. The MODZ FS2 seating was stitched with The Golf Cart Mafia® logo, adding a personalized touch to the build. Big Bad Carts supplied the lift for the golf cart, and Mavericks Metal Works handled the fabrication work, ensuring a taller lift and custom modifications to the stretched TXT frame.

The wheels and tires were carefully selected to complement the overall design. Capone features Nitto 35x12.50/22 tires and FX Sport 22x12 wheels, which required adaptations to fit the build. The fitment and fabrication work were carried out by Maverick Metal Works.

JC Powder Coating and Sasser Golf Carts of Goldsboro, both local businesses, played significant roles in the build process. JC Powder Coating handled the powder coating, while Sasser Golf Carts provided assistance with finishes and workspace for the

The heart of Capone lies in its Navitas 5KW 600Amp motor and controller, paired with ECO Battery's 70V lithium battery. This powerful combination ensures optimal performance, especially when powering the massive 35" tires.

Throughout the build, The Golf Cart Mafia® maintained their customer-centric approach, collaborating with vendors who shared their passion and dedication to the golf cart industry. They express their gratitude to all the vendors involved, as well as their loyal Mafia customers, and emphasize their commitment to being a leader in the industry for years to come.

By creating Capone, The Golf Cart Mafia® aimed to create a truly unique and standout golf cart, and with the support of the vendors and local businesses mentioned, they were able to achieve their goal.

SELECTING A MAINTENANCE-FREE GOLF OR PTV BATTERY: KNOW YOUR OPTIONS

GGolf and Personal Transportation Vehicle (PTV) owners often insist on maintenance-free batteries over flooded lead acid, which require maintenance and watering. If you’re among them, your options include standard AGM, a new premium AGM with a carbon additive, and lithium-ion.

1. STANDARD AGM BATTERY

The least expensive maintenance-free battery, it offers a shorter charging time and longer life span than flooded leadacid batteries.

But it should not be used in a partial state of charge (PSoC), must be fully charged after each use to prevent damage and possible early failure, and is not designed for opportunity charging.

Standard AGM is a good option if you don’t use your vehicle much, monitor the state of charge to avoid damaging PSoC, and want a low entry price.

2. ADVANCED AGM WITH CARBON ADDITIVE

Some manufacturers, including Trojan, offer a new type of AGM battery with a carbon additive that delivers all the benefits of standard AGM, but also works in PSoC, lasts much longer, and accepts opportunity charging.

THE TROJAN AES BATTERY, FOR EXAMPLE:

• Lasts Longer. Up to 3x more cycle life than standard AGM. The battery has been validated at 1,200 cycles at 100% depth of discharge (DoD) vs. 400 cycles for AGM. DoD is the percentage of the battery that has been discharged relative to the overall capacity.

• Harsh Conditions. Robust performance in extreme temperatures ranging from

• -40o F to 160o F (-40o C to 71o C).

• Harmless PSoC Operation. Tested to withstand long-term partial state of charging, again and again.

More expensive than AGM, but less than lithium-ion, AES is a good choice if you use your vehicle a lot, need opportunity charging, and want an affordable battery that works harmlessly in PSoC.

3. LITHIUM-ION

• The groundbreaking lithium-ion battery raises the bar on battery performance, with:

• The Longest Life. Lasts up to 10 years.

• Increased Range. Delivers the longest range on the market.

• Fast Charging. Fully charges in just four hours.

• Harmless PSoC and opportunity charging.

It also weighs considerably less than AGM and maintains consistent power regardless of the state of charge

Although the purchase price is the highest, lithium-ion technology delivers the lowest total cost of ownership (TCO) over 10 years.

Lithium-ion is a good option if you use your vehicle as a second car, need the longest possible range and fast charging, and shop based on TCO.

Ranked as the 8th best city to live in the United States by Money Magazine and CNN Money, Peachtree City in Georgia is an ideal spot for those seeking the quiet, country life and the ability to get around in their golf cart, leaving their car at home.

The town’s history is such a legacy that Ladies’ Home Journal recognized Peachtree City as “one of America’s best suburbs” back in 1975. Initially established in the 1950s, this idyllic town is the largest city in Fayette County, Georgia, in the South Metro Atlanta area. With a population of around 40,000,

this charming town is also home to approximately 10,000 golf carts, considered by the majority of residents to be the ultimate way to get around town. Many households have more than 1 cart in the garage. The Georgia Legislature passed an ordinance in 1974 that allows carts to be driven on city streets providing they are equipped with all of the required features and accessories to make them street legal.

There are 100 miles of golf cart paths in Peachtree City, perfect for not only heading out for a round of golf but for taking care of daily errands, grabbing a meal with friends, or just taking a cruise to enjoy the stunning country scenery. Lake Peachtree is around 240 acres and a recreational centerpiece of the city.

There are 2 other large lakes, 3 golf courses, a 2,500-seat amphitheater and dozens of shopping, dining, and other destinations all accessible by golf cart.

One of the country’s first master planned residential communities, Peachtree City uses the slogan, “life can better at 15 mph,” and residents here couldn’t agree more.

CARTS BEFORE CARS

Kim Leonard is the Mayor of Peachtree City and offers these insights into what life is like here. “Taking the golf cart means you're taking your time. At the end of a busy week, we like to load the family on a golf cart and go out for an ice cream cone,” she says.

“Golf carts just might be the alternative transportation mode of the future. And in Peachtree City, with over 10,000 registered golf carts, our citizens use their golf carts to reach shopping centers, restaurants, schools, parks, and city events. And the highlight of our year is the annual Fourth of July golf cart parade,” Leonard said.

Whenever feasible, residents here quickly choose their golf carts for getting around more often than their car. The city’s planners took every step to ensure that this town would be golf cart friendly, which not only makes it easy to get where you’re going but people make friends quickly based around their love of golf carting. And it’s not just the older residents who use them. High schoolers pack the school’s lot with hundreds of carts during the school year.

The rules and laws for golf carts are relatively the same as for a passenger car. A person who is 16-years old or above can drive a cart. Even a 15-year old driver with a valid learner’s permit can drive a cart within Peachtree City. All carts must be registered by someone over 18-years old within 10 days of purchase, with city residents paying about $50.00 for a 3-year

registration permit. Non-residents pay around $250.00 for cart registration for a 3-year period.

A key benefit of using the 100 miles of paths throughout the city is the ability to avoid traffic via the many tunnels and bridges that take carts below or above the roadways, saving a lot of travel time. Errands that used to require a car can now be done in a golf cart, from visiting your doctor, dropping off the kids at school, going to the bank or enjoying a meal out. There are at least 5 businesses in Peachtree City that sell and service new and used carts, ensuring residents can always stay on top of maintenance issues or get their cart upgraded with custom accessories.

Mayor Leonard points out some other benefits to living the golf cart life in Peachtree City. “Driving a golf cart is more social than driving a car. On the golf cart, we say hello to the people we pass. We pull over and help anyone who is lost on the path system. We stop and talk to our neighbors. You just don't get that from an air conditioned car ride.”

There's a good chance you will see some wildlife while traveling most of the city’s paths. There are stop-offs at parks, playgrounds, lakeshores, and memorials, creating a healthy outdoor lifestyle.

If you’re looking for an idyllic, quiet lifestyle in a sweet location for golf cart lovers, you need to plan a visit to Peachtree City.

covers, you may opt to just replace the covers with the same original type of material. But many carts are now used for so much more than golf, and you may be looking to give your cart a new, more comfortable update and even add rear-facing seats to take the kids to the community pool or head out for dinner with another couple. Simple covers may be all you need if your cushion foam is in good condition, but if your seats are worn and don’t provide the comfort you’re used to, new cushions and custom covers may be the best choice, and they are more affordable than you may think.

People that own a golf cart or NEV, (Neighborhood Electric Vehicle), that they use daily appreciate the automotive-like style and comfort offered by Lazy Life Seats + Covers, and the premium quality of craftsmanship and high-end designs that will make their vehicles the center of attention.

The addition of customcrafted golf cart seating can make your ride an eye catching vehicle and can also increase it’s potential sales value should you decide to sell it.

But many of Lazy Life’s customers point out that seats that are of premium workmanship and made with the best materials like foam inserts and finest quality of marine grade vinyl provides a much more comfortable ride experience, easing stress on the low back and hip area. This is especially beneficial on the golf course and on more rugged trails or other terrain.

THE RISE OF GOLFCART FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOODS:

THE MODERN HAVEN FOR EASY LIVING

golfcartcommunity
www.GolfCarting.com 44

Imagine a neighborhood where the hum of golf carts replaces the rumble of cars, where residents casually glide along scenic streets, enjoying the open air and friendly waves from neighbors. Welcome to the era of golf-cart friendly residential communities!

In recent years, these innovative neighborhoods have been popping up across the country, offering a unique and convenient way of life. In this article, we will explore the reasons behind the surge in golf-cart friendly communities, the advantages they offer, and the features that make them so appealing.

The Growing Popularity of Golf-Cart Friendly Communities

The increasing prevalence of golf-cart friendly neighborhoods can be attributed to several factors.

Firstly, there is a growing desire for alternative modes of transportation that are eco-friendly, cost-effective, and promote a sense of community. Golf carts fit the bill perfectly, as they are emission-free, economical, and encourage social interaction among residents. Furthermore, the rise of retirement communities and active adult living has contributed to the demand for golf-cart friendly neighborhoods. These communities provide a relaxed and convenient lifestyle for seniors who prefer a slower pace of life and easy access to amenities within their community.

Advantages of Golf-Cart Friendly Neighborhoods Convenience and Accessibility: One of the key advantages of these neighborhoods is the ease of getting around. Residents can hop into their golf carts and effortlessly

GOLF CARTING MAGAZINE 45

golfcartcommunity

reach nearby destinations such as grocery stores, parks, or community clubhouses. This accessibility reduces dependence on cars and shortens travel times, making everyday tasks a breeze.

Social Interaction: Golf-cart friendly neighborhoods foster a sense of camaraderie among residents. As neighbors travel on their carts, they have ample opportunities for spontaneous interactions, resulting in a tight-knit community. It's not uncommon to see impromptu chats, neighborhood parades, or even golf-cart poker runs, where residents explore their surroundings while having fun.

Safety and Environment: With fewer cars on the road, golfcart friendly neighborhoods often boast a safer environment for pedestrians, cyclists, and cart riders. Additionally, the reduced reliance on traditional vehicles contributes to lower carbon emissions, promoting sustainability and cleaner air.

Golf Cart-Specific Garages: A Modern Amenity

Builders and developers have recognized the need to accommodate golf carts in residential design. As a result, golf cart-specific garages have become a sought-after feature in these communities. These garages are designed specifically for the Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV), and some include charging stations to cater to the unique needs of golf cart owners. This innovative approach demonstrates the commitment of builders to meet the evolving demands of residents.

Community Clubhouses and Amenities

Golf-cart friendly neighborhoods often offer impressive community clubhouses, which serve as gathering places for

residents. These facilities house fitness centers, swimming pools, recreational areas, and even golf-cart parking spaces. The clubhouse acts as a hub for social activities, fostering a strong sense of community and providing residents with a wide range of amenities to enjoy.

Golf Cart-Only Roads and Regulations

To ensure the safety and efficiency of golf-cart transportation, many golf-cart friendly neighborhoods designate specific roads solely for golf cart use. These roads are designed with appropriate signage, speed limits, and safety measures, creating a dedicated network for residents to travel without the worry of mixing with traditional vehicles. Moreover, golf-cart neighborhoods often have rules and regulations in place to govern the use of golf carts. These guidelines ensure responsible and respectful cart operation, guaranteeing the well-being of all residents and maintaining the harmonious environment that characterizes these communities.

Golf-cart friendly neighborhoods represent a modern and appealing concept in residential living. With their emphasis on convenience, social interaction, and sustainability, these communities provide an alternative and refreshing lifestyle. As the demand for these neighborhoods continues to rise, developers are taking notice and catering to the specific needs of golf-cart owners. From golf cart-specific garages to dedicated roadways, these communities are evolving to offer a truly integrated golf-cart experience. So, if you're looking for a neighborhood where the sound of tees hitting golf balls is accompanied by the whir of electric motors, a golf-cart friendly community might just be your ticket to a vibrant and effortless lifestyle.

ASK THE MECHANIC

Q: I have an electric EZGO RXV and the cart is locked up and not going anywhere. What's the issue?

A: The E-Z-GO RXV model utilizes an electromagnetic motor brake rather than a mechanical cable or pressure line for hydraulic brakes. When this brake becomes defective it will lock itself and will cause the cart to be immobile. I would suspect the motor brake may be the issue here. In this case, put the cart into tow mode and remove the cover on the passenger side over top of the controller by removing the three plastic push pins to release the cover from the mount. You will notice plugs labeled 1,2,3,4. You will unclip these plugs and switch them from 1 to 3 and from 2 to 4 and this should unlock the brake. Be sure to use caution when doing this as you will have no braking at all so do not perform this on a slope of any kind.

Q: This procedure did unlock the brake but how do I replace the motor brake?

A: First put the cart on flat ground and chock the wheels. Both of these steps are very important. Confirm cart is in the TOW position with the key OFF. Leave the batteries hooked up as you will need power during re-install. Unplug the brake and remove 3x 10mm bolts on brake. Remove the brake. Clean

the mounting surface on the motor. Hang the new brake on armature and push the cart just slightly to the point that the plug towards the top lines up with the holes. Start all three bolts (just barely). Plug the brake in and put the cart in neutral as this should unlock the brake. Don’t let the cart roll away. Tighten the bolts evenly to 10 - 13 INCH POUNDS, if you don't have a inch-torque wrench, tighten the bolts enough to fully compress the lock washers and not much more. Be sure not to overtighten! Turn the key off and switch the tow/run back to run, turn key on and test drive.

Q: I got the new brake installed and it works but I notice a burning smell. Is this normal?

A: The brake may not be properly aligned or the mounting bolts may be overtightened or may have received a defective brake. Perhaps the brake is binding and causing the issue. Remove the brake again and examine all the installation steps in the correct order while making sure all bolts are aligned properly and the mounting hole is in the center of the brake. If this center hole is off a bit, it may be necessary to disassemble the brake to make sure everything is aligned properly. There are videos on YouTube to show how to do this procedure properly.
